Liposuction Sunshine Coast

Liposuction is a procedure where unwanted fat deposits are removed from areas of the body such as thighs, arms, hips, stomach, and under the chin to recontour the body. Some patients may also want to add volume to areas such as the buttocks, breasts, or face whilst undergoing liposuction. Therefore, liposculpting and fat grafting is often used to redistribute fat to the chosen areas.

Liposuction is not a weight loss solution and cannot replace a healthy routine of diet and exercise. Suitable patients must be at their ideal weight and be able to maintain a healthy lifestyle to ensure lasting post-surgery results. Skin elasticity is also an important element to consider, as the skin will need to shrink back into place after the fat is removed, and if excess skin is present, the results may not be optimal. Liposuction surgery can be performed on its own or in conjunction with other procedures such as a facelift, breast augmentation/reduction, abdominoplasty, and thigh reduction.

What can be achieved with liposuction?

The benefits of liposuction can include:

  • Improve body contours and proportions
  • Remove persistent fat deposits still present despite healthy diet and exercise
  • Treat conditions such as gynaecomastia, lipoma, and post-traumatic pseudolipoma
  • Restore volume to other areas of the body using liposculpting and fat grafting techniques
  • Create a lifted and rejuvenated appearance

How is liposuction surgery performed?

Liposuction is performed under general anaesthetic and is typically a day procedure. Plastic surgeon Dr Grant Fraser-Kirk will make a tiny incision in the chosen areas to insert a sterile fluid that can help to reduce swelling and bruising. A cannula (thin, hollow tube) is then inserted and moved in a controlled motion back and forth to break up the fat. Once dislodged, it is suctioned out via a syringe attached to the cannula or through a surgical vacuum pump. If the patient will be undergoing liposculpting or fat grafting, the removed fat is sent through a purification process to eliminate fluids and purify the fat cells, making it nutrient-rich. The chosen site for volume restoration is then prepped to receive the purified fat via injection. once the desired amount of fat has been liposuctioned, and if required, reinserted, the incisions are closed. Liposuction will take one to two hours to complete depending upon the extent of liposuction being conducted.

What can I expect during recovery?

Immediately following surgery, patients may experience bruising, swelling, numbness, and pain to the surgical sites. A compression garment will be fitted onto the treated areas and must be worn for at least six weeks to reduce bruising and swelling whilst reinforcing the newly shaped body contours. Drains may be inserted in the surgical sites to prevent fluid accumulation, and if required, antibiotics and pain medication can be prescribed.

General recovery instructions:

  • Take sufficient time off work – between two to ten days.
  • Take prescribed medications and lotions.
  • Wear the compression garments.
  • Avoid vigorous activity for six weeks.
  • Attend all post-operative appointments to monitor healing.

These recovery instructions may differ if patients are undergoing additional surgeries and will be tailored to each patient’s personal needs and requirements. It is vitally important that post-operative care plans are followed to ensure minimal scarring where possible and to create the best probability for successful results.

How much will liposuction cost in Sunshine Coast?

The cost for liposuction surgery will vary for each patient due to the extent of liposuction that may be needed. Other factors such as surgeon fees, hospital fees, anaesthetist costs, and post-operative care costs will also influence costs. At a consultation with Dr Fraser-Kirk, an estimation of costs is provided to patients after an in-depth discussion about their health and anticipated outcomes.
